Sanitary Sewer Overflow reported April 21, 2017

On April 21, WPC found a sewer leak near 1313 Fourth Avenue. A concerned citizen called the WPC 24-hour line. He told staff that his address smelled like sewer.

ACTION TAKEN: Staff inspected and found that Manhole 0536 had overflowed into a creek 165 feet west of 1313 Fourth Avenue. WPC inserted a rod into the sewer line and removed the cause of the blockage.

RISK TO PUBLIC: The City of Leavenworth Public Works Department asks citizens to stay away from the creek. Locations are west of Fourth Avenue to Second Avenue, between Middle and Prosepect streets from Second Avenue to Fifth Street and between Elm and Vine streets.

FURTHER ACTION TAKEN: WPC placed contaminated creek signs and will take water quality samples. These signs will remain in place until the water quality is back to normal levels.

WHAT RESIDENTS CAN DO TO HELP: Please keep children and pets away from the creek. Citizens should contact WPC, 913-682-1090, anytime  they smell sewer or see sanitary sewer water on the ground.
