Leavenworth Fire Department to provide free smoke detectors

The Leavenworth Fire Department has qualified for two programs from the American Red Cross and Kansas State Fire Marshal to provide free smoke detectors to residents.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, one-third of fire deaths result from fires in properties without smoke detectors. The risk of death in home fires is cut in half when there is a working smoke detector in the home.  When a smoke detector sounds, get out and stay out.

The smoke detectors cannot be distributed to rental property landlords, duplexes, townhomes or apartment complexes in which it is the landlord’s responsibility to supply the alarms per Kansas State Statute, #31-162.

Fire Chief Gary Birch encourages residents in need of smoke detectors to contact the Leavenworth Fire Department to receive free smoke detectors. When a resident calls for a free smoke detector, the Leavenworth Fire Department will come and install it in person. A limited supply is available. Call at 913-682-3346 or email mshigley@firstcity.org
