George Floyd's death and racial justice in the Leavenworth community
Statement from the Leavenworth City Commission to Leavenworth citizens

We are heartbroken and appalled by the senseless and gruesome death of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25. First and foremost, we extend our sincerest sympathies to Mr. Floyd’s family. His death – as well as other African Americans who have died because of police brutality – is a tragedy for every community across our nation including Leavenworth. Our hope is that Mr. Floyd’s death serves as a catalyst for real and lasting reform in the nation’s policing practices and criminal justice system.
As elected officials we will continue to do our very best to set the conditions within our City in which every citizen is treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. In this regard, we accept our responsibility to address instances of unequal treatment of Leavenworth citizens, whether it be in their interactions with police officers, the criminal justice system, or both. But in carrying out this responsibility we ask that all citizens work with us, and with one another to build trust and to show by our actions the community’s commitment to a just, fair and peaceful society.

It is co-sponsored by the Leavenworth County Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) chapter #4036 and Unity in the Community.
