Charles C. Hagemeister honors Vietnam veteran

May 25, 2021

The Leavenworth City Commission is saddened to hear of the passing of Medal of Honor recipient and Leavenworth, Kansas resident, Charles C. Hagemeister.  Lt. Col. Hagemeister, U.S. Army (Retired), passed away on May 19, 2021 at the age of 74. We extend our sincerest condolences to his wife Barbara, two children, and the rest of the Hagemeister family.

He was awarded the Medal of Honor in May 1968, “for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty,” during combat operations with the First Cavalry Division in Vietnam in March 1967.  He served a full career in the U.S. Army and retired from active duty in 1990.

Lt. Col. (Retired) Hagemeister served on the Board of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, was involved in local civic groups and supported the greater Leavenworth community, including service events sponsored by VFW Post 56, and Wreaths Across America activities at the Fort Leavenworth and Leavenworth National Cemeteries.

A man of impeccable integrity, Lt. Col. (Retired) Hagemeister was admired by all who knew him. We salute his lifetime of service. He will be greatly missed by his adopted hometown of Leavenworth and the broader community of active duty U.S. service members and military veterans across our nation. May he rest in peace.
