Park Maintenance

The Park Maintenance Division maintains the city's parks, as well as over forty City-owned properties and common areas ranging in size from very small to 98 acres and totaling over 424 acres.  Included in our responsibilities are sports fields, tennis and basketball courts, restrooms, picnic shelters, sidewalks, park signs, flower beds, trees, playground equipment, decorative fences, campground, a shower house, aquatic center, boat ramp, 10 irrigation systems, walking trails, parking lots, and lighting of various types.

During the course of a year, the routine maintenance of the Parks Department includes mowing grass, cleaning restrooms, trimming trees, repairing vandalism, replacing lights, preparing numerous athletic fields for play, turf maintenance (including irrigation, seeding, aerating and fertilizing), leaf removal, working with volunteers, ordering flowers, planting trees, constructing/repairing picnic tables and benches, installing walkways, painting buildings inside and out, minor plumbing repairs, planting and caring for planters, picking up trash, and providing support for the Riverfront Community Center, Performing Arts Center, City Hall, special events and other city-wide activities.  Parks staff also assists the Streets Department with snow removal.

Reporting Graffiti

The city responds to and removes graffiti on public property. Graffiti involving gangs, racial or ethnic material is given the highest priority and is removed or covered within 48 to 72 hours.

Graffiti problems at other public locations can be reported in two ways:

E-mail the Service Center with a description of the location of the problem and any other pertinent information. Please include your name and home phone number for our records.
Call our Traffic Control Division 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, at 913-682-0650.

If the graffiti occurred on private or residential property, it is the property owner's responsibility to have it removed. To make a police report about private property damage, call 913-651-2260
