Park History:
The land for Cody Park was acquired by the City in 1972 and the park opened in 1977. The park consists of approximately 15 acres of land. The land and original improvements were funded through a grant from the Land and Water Conservation Fund. In 2013, the City rebuilt the restrooms. In 2018, new playground equipment was added.
This park contains a beautiful Children's Memorial Garden, facing the parking lot at the Shrine Park Road entrance. It was planted by their parents, the "Compassionate Friends," in honor of their children who died too young.
Children remembered on the plaque are:
- Jeffrey S. McBroom
- Heidi M. Paige
- Teddy A. Madigan
- Nick Battitori-Glover
- Al M. Treat
- Michael I. Carroll
- Michael I. Matzeder
- "and all children gone before us."
In 2022, a cornhole court was added. The court is BYOB (Bring Your Own Bags). This game has gained great popularity over the last 15 years. Cornhole is defined as a lawn game in which players toss beanbags toward a slanted platform with the aim of passing the beanbag through a hole in the center of the platform. The game is also called Bag Toss, Bags, or Soft Horseshoes, depending on the region.
In February 2024, the City Commission approved the Buffalo Bill Cody Park Sports Court Replacement Project which will bring dedicated pickleball courts and a new basketball court to the park. Construction begins soon.
